NATIONAL NEWS (CNN) — A teenage girl was killed and another injured in a boating crash at a Redington Shores dock on Tuesday, authorities said.
Deviny Boese, 15, was taken to St. Petersburg General Hospital where she died from her injuries. Sarah Dobbs, 15, was transported to All Children's Hospital with an ankle injury and is expected to be okay.
The crash occurred just after 1 p.m. at the Redington Yacht and Tennis Club dock located at 17717 Gulf Boulevard.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, two teenage boys were on a boat that was pulling an inner tube with two teenage girls on it. Deputies say the boat's operator drove the boat too close to the dock.
The tube hit the dock and the two girls aboard were ejected, the sheriff's office said. Boese hit a piling when she was thrown from the tube.
"It doesn't appear that alcohol was a factor or involved. It just appears that it may be a freak accident at this point," said PCSO Lt. Thomas Nestor.
The boat belongs to the parents of 15-year-old Brandon Noah, who was operating the boat. The sheriff's office says his family recently purchased the boat and the teen took it without his parents' knowledge.
"They did not have permission to be out on the boat," said PCSO spokesperson Cecilia Barreda.
Noah and another teen on the boat, 15-year-old Noah Epstein, were not injured.
Deputies say Noah jumped out of the boat and assisted the girls out of the water. He and others at the dock administered CPR on Boese until Seminole Fire Rescue arrived on scene.
In the meantime, deputies say Epstein left the scene on the boat and went to Noah's home to notify his parents about the crash.
Noah was cited for no boater identification and for reckless operation of a vessel resulting in a fatality. His family turned down Bay News 9's request for an interview.
