First troops in Afghanistan to come back to the U.S.
NBC NEWS — The first troops to leave Afghanistan as part of the U.S. drawdown are on their way home.
Dozens of members of the Iowa National Guard's First Squadron 113th Cavalry Regiment flew out of Bagram Airbase today.
Commanders had been using a build-up of 33,000 extra soldiers for a major push against the Taliban. An afghan unit will take over for the 650 departing soldiers from Iowa.
Major combat units are not expected to start leaving until late this fall.
President Obama announced last month he would pull 10,000 extra troops out of Afghanistan this year. The remaining 23,000 are expected to leave by next summer.
