NBC NATIONAL NEWS — The Obama administration is proposing changes to help military families deal with caregiving.
First Lady Michelle Obama explained the extension of the Family and Medical Leave Act.
The new proposal will create a special 26-week leave for military caregivers of veterans who have been discharged within the past five years. It will also help families of those who were recently deployed.
Mrs. Obama says the new rules will give support and flexibility to military families.
"The rules they've proposed under the Family Medical Leave Act will help more military family members take the time they need to care for their loved ones,” said the First Lady. “Now this means that more caregivers can now provide support at a hospital for days or weeks at a time. They can help their loved ones make that transition back home."
Ms. Obama says the change would help prevent family members caring for loved ones in the armed forces from losing their jobs.
