When crews responded to a fire that was reported at an east Denver strip mall early Wednesday morning, they found five dead inside a bar. Police are investigating the scene as a case of homicide and arson.

Denver Police said the fire was was reported at approximately 2 a.m. Wednesday at Fero's Bar & Grill at 357 South Colorado Boulevard. When authorities entered the premises, they found four women and one man dead.

"There appears to be some trauma to the bodies," Denver Police Chief Robert White said. "At this point, we can't identify the nature of the trauma."

Though Colorado Boulevard was expected to reopen at approximately 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, police have had the major road closed between East Alameda Avenue and East Dakota Avenue since they arrive on scene as part of what Denver Commander Ron Saunier believes will be a "long, drawn-out investigation."

"We don't have a lot of details," Saunier said. "The bar was set on fire. At this point, I'm guessing that was done to mask a homicide."

The identity of the victims has not been released, as police were still attempting to contact all of their families Wednesday morning.

Police have not identified any suspects at this time, and Saunier said no one has come forward with an account of what may have transpired inside the bar.

Anyone with information on the crime is being urged to call Crime Stoppers at (720)-913-7867.
