The 1940 census records will be released online for the first time on April 2, 2012.

Details of 132 million Americans who lived through the 1930s will be available.

It was a decade of high unemployment, Midwestern drought and upheaval as people relocated trying to find work and start new lives.

Scholars expect the census data to provide great insight to the events of the decade.
