NBC News — Tensions remain high along Turkey's border with Syria. Explosions were seen close to Turkey's border friday morning, but the actual border area remained calm. Turkey's military is maintaining a high security presence in the region following several Syrian mortar strikes over the past couple of weeks.

The escalation follows a deadly mortar attack by Syrian forces on a Turkish village. Five people, including a mother and her three children, were killed. Turkey has retaliated since then by firing their own shells into Syria.
