NBC News — The parliament elected in Egypt's first legislative vote after Hosni Mubarak's removal nearly a year ago held its inaugural session monday. The proceedings opened with lawmakers standing for a minute's silence in memory of the hundreds of protesters killed during the Egyptian revolution.
Islamists now dominate the 498-seat chamber, the speaker is expected to come from the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group that won just under half of the seats. Held over several weeks starting November 28th, the parliamentary election was the freest in Egypt's modern history.
