NBC News — Egypt plans to open its border with the Gaza Strip daily starting on May 28. People who live in Gaza along with Hamas rulers welcomed the announcement.
An Egyptian news agency says the move is aimed at easing restrictions on Palestinians who live in Gaza. Egypt's border with Gaza opened sporadically under the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak. Mubarak's government cooperated with Israel in enforcing a blockade on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and has a 1979 peace treaty with Israel. But Mubarak was to hand over power to Egypt's army in February after 18 days of massive anti-government protests in Cairo. Israeli officials were not immediately available for comment.
