NBC NATIONAL NEWS — A criminal investigation is underway after an American soldier releases photos showing U.S. troops posing with Afghan corpses.
NBC News cropped the photo in order to make it less offensive.
The photo and 17 others were taken two years ago, but were released to the Los Angeles times by a solider from the 82nd Airborne Division. He tells the LA Times he released them to draw attention to the safety risk and breakdown in leadership and discipline.
In the photo attached to this story, U.S. soldiers and Afghan police are posing with the mangled corpse of an Afghan suicide bomber.
Secretary of defense Leon Panetta released a statement saying he, "strongly rejects the conduct depicted in the two year old photographs."
He also says, "the images by no means represent the values or professionalism of the vast majority of U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan today."
Secretary Panetta says he's disappointed the Los Angeles Times published the photos, despite requests from the Pentagon not to publish them.
Pentagon officials say anyone found responsible for "this inhuman conduct will be held accountable."
