NBC News — Four month old conjoined twins who were born joined at the breast and abdomen were successfully separated after a six hour operation in a hospital in Shanghai on Monday, Sept. 5. The twin girls are now under supervision in the Intensive Care Unit of Shanghai Children's Medical Center. The two were born back in April and had a combined weight of 10 pounds, 12 ounces.
The operation to separate the twins required four teams of doctors working at the same time. Doctors managed to split their shared heart sacs and a single liver, reshape breast bones and breasts with titanium alloy plates. They now each have a working heart and half a liver. Both are expected to make a full recovery.
