Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — The U.S. Army will restructure its combat brigades to help the Pentagon save billions of dollars.
The plan is to gradually reduce the number of combat brigades and reduce total army personnel, which means letting go of about 80,000 soldiers over the next ten years.
Congress has told the Defense Department to lower its budget by $487 billion over the next ten years.
Military leaders say the goal is to cut costs, not the effectiveness of the armed forces.
