More companies are asking job candidates to provide their Facebook login and password.

While some people say the request is an invasion of privacy, many applicants say they can't afford to say no.

The issue is the focus of proposed legislation in Illinois and Maryland that would forbid public agencies from asking for access to social networks.

Companies that don't ask for passwords often ask job applicants to friend a human resource manager or log in to the social website during an interview.

The practice is more prevalent among public agencies, like those hiring to fill law enforcement positions or 911 dispatchers.
