Coffee helps depression in women
nbc national news — Java does more than give you a jolt of energy in the morning. New research suggests it may help prevent depression in women.
Now, doctors say, coffee may lower the risk for depression in women by as much as 20-percent!
Some avid coffee drinkers are way ahead of science say that drinking coffee gives them a mood boost.
Harvard researchers looked at data on more than 50-thousand middle-aged women over a 10-year period.
Those who drank the most caffeinated coffee , about 4 to 5 cups a day, were less likely to be diagnosed and treated for depression.
"In general I'm a positive person, so whether or not that has to do with the coffee or not, I'm not sure," said one coffee drinker.
Decaf coffee did not have the same protective effect. The key is likely caffeine, but researchers didn't have enough data on caffeinated soda or tea drinkers to know for sure.
"I've seen a number of women who are already depressed," Michael McKee, PhD from the Cleveland clinic said," Middle aged women who tell me that caffeine does more for them than any other of the medications around."
Depression affects about 1 in 5 women during their lifetime.
"We don't have a good way to prevent depression these days," said Alberto Ascherio, MD with the Harvard School of Public Health, "There are some treatments, but of course prevention would be much more effective."
Doctors say it's way too early to start prescribing coffee. Genetics and a number of lifestyle factors affect a person's risk for depression.But it seems a cup of joe might leave you feeling good well beyond the last drop.
About 80-percent of caffeine consumption worldwide comes from coffee.
