NBC NEWS — Thousands of Christian pilgrims marched through Jerusalem's old city this morning, Friday, April 6, walking along the route they believe Christ took as he walked to his crucifixion.
The route ended at the ancient church of the holy sepulcher, believed to be the site of the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.
In the Mexican colonial town of Taxco, penitents carried heavy bundles of thorny branches to emulate the suffering of Christ as he carried the cross. Others carried crosses with chains around their ankles to remember Christ's suffering.
People in the German town of Bensheim marked the beginning of Easter by re-enacting Jesus' walk of suffering to his death on a cross. Almost 100 actors took part in the procession.
In one town in the Philippines, they take the re-enactments a step further as the faithful allow themselves to be nailed to the cross. The annual ritual is opposed by religious leaders in the Philippines, but it continues every year.
