NBC News — The blind Chinese human rights activist lawyer now at the center of a diplomatic showdown between the U.S. and China planned his entire escape from house arrest, that's according to a friend of Chen Guangcheng. He Peirong says he drove Chen to Beijing after he fled house arrest from his home village in east China. Chen then took shelter at the U.S. embassy for six days before leaving to be admitted to a hospital.
He says Chen masterminded the entire escape. Chen's case cast a shadow over last week's visit to Beijing by Secretary of State Hilary Clinton for talks intended to improve ties between the world's two biggest economies. China now says Chen may be able to leave the country to study abroad.
