NBC News — China is getting ready to launch the first module of its planned space station later this year. The first space station module arrived at its Gobi Desert launch site back in June. The module is scheduled to fly later this year and will be ready for Chinese astronauts the following year.
China is jostling with neighbors Japan and India for a bigger presence in space, but its plans have been scrutinized. Fears of a space arms race with the United States and other powers mounted after China blew up one of its own weather satellites with a ground based missile in January of 2007.
