Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto and other Central American leaders are in Costa Rica this week for a regional summit to combat drug trafficking and other issues. Large areas of Central America have been ravaged by Mexican and South American drug gangs using the region to smuggle drugs to the north.

Costa Rica's foreign minister announced the creation of a security administrator who will advance a regional drug strategy. He also called for greater financial controls in the region to monitor and control the billions of dollars in drug money that belongs to the cartels. Among other issues on the table, a plan to build a bridge between Costa Rica and Panama.
