Battle continues in Khaddafy's hometown
NBC News — Revolutionary forces engaged in fierce street battles with the final pocket of resistance wednesday in Moammar Khaddafy's hometown. Sirte is the last major Libyan city still partially under the control of forces loyal to the deposed leader.
A commander said between 60 and 100 loyalists were held up in a residential area, and revolutionary fighters faced heavy rocket and gunfire from snipers in surrounding buildings. Sirte has been under siege by troops loyal to Libya's interim National Transitional Council for weeks. Two months have passed since the former rebels took control of Tripoli, but Libya's new leaders have refrained from declaring national "liberation" until the fall of Sirte.
