A person who works closely with Barbara Walters says the television veteran will retire soon.

Walters plans to retire in May 2014, ending a television career that started more than 50 years ago.

Walters, who is 83, started her TV career in 1961 as a writer for NBC's "Today" show.

She became the show's first female co-host in 1974.

In 1976 Walters became the first female network evening news co-anchor of ABC's Evening News.

Walters has been the lead host of the ABC's "The View" since it was created in 1997.

She was hospitalized earlier this year after falling and cutting her head.
