Heightened tensions and increased security were on display Friday at a string of movie theaters across the country after a threatening phone message was left on an answering machine at the Carmike Cinemas headquarters in Georgia.

The call said that bombs had been placed in Carmike theaters across the United States.

Search teams locked down and then looked through theaters in several states including Georgia, Kentucky, Illinois, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

No explosives have been found.

Police have not talked about any possible connection between the threats and an arrest made last night when 23-year-old Joshua Vardeman tried to carry a loaded 9mm pistol into a Carmike Cinema in Columbus, Georgia, the city where the theater chain is based.

More ammunition was found inside Vardeman's car.

Investigators believe an angry employee could be responsible for the bomb threat.
