NATIONAL NEWS (CNN) — Three people were busted after breaking into an East Valley home and sending police on a wild chase.
The police chase ended in a backyard near Lindsey and Southern where the suspects, including 22-year-old Travis Schuetz, jumped into a trash can to hide.
It all started around 3 p.m. No one was home when police said Schuetz and two teens broke into a house near Gilbert and the Loop 202. A few minutes later, the owner came home to a big surprise.
"I unlocked the front door and stepped in and saw someone running out of my master bedroom, and running out the back of my house," said the homeowner who asked to be identified as "Joe."
He ran outside and called 9-1-1.
"They went up the driveway, and got into the car that was idling in front of the house," he said.
Joe said they took off with several thousand dollars worth of stuff, including his wife's music box, and a commemorative coin.
"The homeowner followed that vehicle long enough to get a plate and ended up losing it," said Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato.
Police said minutes later the suspects stopped at a pawn shop near Main and Stapley. A pawn shop employee told CBS 5 she noticed the jewelry was fake and the suspects left.
"The vehicle left they were able to confirm it with a plate, they attempted to stop the vehicle and it failed to yield," Landato said.
The suspects drove on the canal bank for several miles, before dumping the car. A 15-year-old female suspect was caught inside the car. A 17-year-old male suspect was caught nearby. Schuetz was found in someone's backyard trash can.
"I looked out the window and there were four police officers with guns, looking at something like they were going to shoot," said Amanda Kelsch who was home at the time.
When police found Schuetz, they said they found the stolen property, as well as meth in his pocket.
Officials said it turns out the car they were riding in was stolen five days ago.
