NBC NATIONAL NEWS — A Florida community is calling one of their neighbors a hero after he saved an elderly disabled man from his burning home.
The fire happened early Sunday morning and the victim, 66-year-old Jim Morton, says he's doing as well as one can do given the circumstances.
"I didn't wake up, at least as far as I know, I didn't. This guy dragged me out," Morton says.
Morton doesn't know who his rescuer was nor does he remember anything about his rescue.
His hero ran from the backyard and into the burning home to save him.
"I've had 13 back surgeries. There's no way I could've made it out myself if it hadn't been for that guy," Morton says.
Morton came back to his home on Sunday afternoon to see if anything could be salvaged.
He says it's all destroyed, but he ultimately wants to find his hero.
"I owe my life to this guy. I said what do you do? You just don't go up and shake a guys hand for something like that," says Morton.
A neighbor, Aida Vazquez, says the rescuer also came to her door to warn her of the fire because he was afraid the blaze would spread to her home.
"He really saved us too because if that would have been much bigger, but it could've easily caught our house on fire," Aida says.
Aida also doesn't know who the hero is, only that he lives in a home nearby.
An official cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
