Beaverton Police said an officer who ticketed a driver for not wearing a seat belt Tuesday was among the first responders when the same driver crashed into a building this morning.

When the driver and the officer recognized each other, the driver thanked the officer for previously ticketing him.

"I mean, he just told us that we needed to be wearing our seatbelts because if we got in an accident we could be killed," said Ian Hoover, whose ticket prompted him to buckle up. "And just now we just got hit here and I know that if he didn't gave me a ticket yesterday, I wouldn't have been wearing my seatbelt today."

Neither the driver nor any of his three passengers were injured. The crash happened at the intersection of Southwest Canyon Road and Southwest Hall Boulevard.

Two cars were involved in the incident, one of which crashed into a building.

Beaverton Police said it is very rare that a police officer has the opportunity to actually see the result of his or her contact with a driver.

"When we issue a citation or a warning, we never really know: did that make an affect? Did we help them? Did that help make our community a much safer place? And an incident like this helps show that it does make that difference," said Mike Rowe, a spokesman for Beaverton Police Dept.
