NBC NATIONAL NEWS — The mother of 4-year-old Yariam Ramos found the girl after hearing a noise come from another room.
On a peaceful Sunday morning, a quiet day at home turned deadly.
Medical examiners say Yariam Ramos was watching TV with other children in her south side apartment and she tried to climb a dresser to change the channel, when the television came crashing down.
Neighbor Elaine Rutzen wouldn't go on camera, but says she used to watch the girl play in their backyard and is shocked by the news.
"I wonder how a child could get injured in such a way.
But I know that children do get into mischief, and it doesn't take very much," said Elaine Rutzen.
It's a problem that has run rampant in the Midwest this year.
The consumer product safety commission reports more than 19,000 people have been injured by falling TVs from 2000 to 2010.
169 young children died in that time frame.
Jane Howard works with Children's Hospital's Community Outreach Division and she has seen countless cases of dangerous devices.
"It happens more often than you'd think," said Howard.
Her suggestion to parents? Use an inexpensive furniture or TV strap.
A teaching moment born from tragedy for one Milwaukee family.
