Governor Jindal proposes pension changes for state workers
BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Governor Bobby Jindal is asking state lawmakers to take another look at the retirement program for state workers.
Jindal unveiling a new proposal today.
Jindal is proposing a list of pension changes that would shrink retirement benefits for thousands of current state workers, boost their costs and push back the age for collecting benefits.
It’s all to help save the state money on retirement programs. The governor says the state is $19 billion short when it comes to fully funding the program.
“These changes we believe will make our retirement programs more affordable, more secure, and fair to both taxpayers and state employees,” Governor Jindal, explained.
Lawmakers are set to look over the proposed changes when the session starts in March.
