At NBC33, our goal is to tell YOUR stories. In telling those stories, we noticed that more often than not, the hardships of the struggling economy have became a focus of local families. That’s why we partnered with Neighbors Federal Credit Union to hold a contest that hoped to help at least one family ease the burden.

On November 1, 2011, we began a Credit Card Pay Off Contest that offered 22 chances to register to win. Over 16-hundred submissions came through on the NBC33 Facebook page. But only one person could win the grand prize.

A computer program randomly selected from the large pool of contestants and picked Jennifer O’Neil Cook of Plaquemine. The mother of two said she entered every night after learning about the contest from watching the broadcast.

On Friday, Nov. 25, Jennifer, her husband and two children collected the top prize from Neighbors Federal Credit Union.

"We've been having a pretty rough time for the past three years, so this will pay at least two cards off and help a little with Christmas," Jennifer told NBC33 after gaining the prize.

Jennifer also said that when it comes to contests, she’s never had much luck. In fact, she says she “never wins anything.” That’s why she couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw our number pop up on her caller ID.

“I was so excited my heart was pounding out of my chest,” she said.

While out at Neighbors, NBC33 News talked with the CFO for the bank about the things people can do to try to improve their financial situation, too. He says that interest rates are at an all time low, so now is the perfect time to refinance or consolidate debt.

We have an extended interview with tips and information about a free class that can teach you how to become more fiscally sound. Click here to see that story.
