Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Citizens living close to the levees came to an informational meeting on the impending flood waters.
Councilwoman Tara Wicker wants everyone to be vigilant, but remain calm.
For Velma Johnson, that's easier said than done. "I'm concerned because I don't want the water to take my things away and I don't want it to take me away."
With the opening of the Morganza Spillway, Jim Ferguson of the Department of Public Works says citizens, like Johnson, shouldn't fear that the water will spill over the levees, but that the levees might not hold under the prolonged pressure. "These levees are being tested as they have never been tested before".
He's confident the levees will hold, but says they haven't seen the water this high for this long. The Mississippi River is expected to stay at flood stage through the end of June.
If the levees don't hold Johnson is prepared. “I got my medication and I packed a few things."
