School to end early in Assumption Parish due to rising waters

Thursday, May 19, 2011 - 6:20pm

Schools in Assumption Parish will close this week, before backwater flooding threatens several neighborhoods there.

Bayous and marsh land make up most of the parish, and Lake Verret covers nearly the entire northwest corner of the parish.

Residents and officials are concerned that if any backwater flooding makes it here, there would be nowhere for the water to go but into their homes.

The school board made the call last night to end the school year early so that families can prepare for the worst.
