Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — As the Mississippi river continues to rise, sand bags are being placed along certain points in the levee to prevent seepage.

The Ponchartrain Levee District has been laying these sandbags out since the end of April, and they anticipate that the Morganza Spillway will flood the Atchafalya Basin.

The Army Corps of Engineers says the levees should hold at 49 feet in Baton Rouge, but no one's taking chances.

State Police say one of the problems helping the seepage is people riding ATV's at the base of the levee, which causes the soil to loosen and allow more water to leak out of the levee.
