MORGANZA, La (NBC33) - — After weeks of waiting, the Army Corps of Engineers has opened the Morganza Spillway. The move keeps big cities like Baton Rouge and New Orleans above water, but inundates thousands of acres of farmland, and forces thousands who call the Atchafalaya Basin home, out.
"None of these decisions are easy." , says Colonel Ed Fleming, Commander of the Missisippi River Commission.
Saturday, the Corps only opened 1 of the 125 bays. They're expecting to open more as the crest gets closer. As more bays open, more fish camps and farmland will flood. Inundation maps show some places in South Central Louisiana could see over 20 feet of water.
The Corps says the spillway could stay open for up to 3 weeks.
