NORCO, La (NBC33) — Today, the Army Corps of Engineers opened a portion of the Bonnet Carre Spillway to relieve pressure on the levee system along the Mississippi River.
Now, State Police are asking you not to stop your car along the interstate to view the spectacle.
When the spillway was last opened in 2008, police say I-10 was backed up for miles, causing a huge bottle-neck and doubling commute time.
Sergeant Len Marie says to stop only for emergencies.
"We want to get the message out that we want all drivers to not stop on the shoulders of Interstate 10 and U.S. 61 to watch the water flow from the spillway. Shoulders are only meant for emergency stopping only," stated Marie.
