BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Today Governor Jindal announced that the Army Corps of Engineers has officially requested the opening of the Bonne Carre Spillway. Approved by the Mississippi River Commission, the Spillyway will open on Monday, May 9.
As of right now, no request has been made to open the Morganza Spillway. That Spillway has only been opened once in 1973. If they do make the call, the Governor says it will be a slow process, but warns that people in the area should begin thinking about preparations.
"Just as families get ready for a hurricane evacuation, those families that live in the flood way, it is not too early for them to begin thinking if the corps makes this decision, what do they need to take with them," Governor Jindal said.
6 parishes have now declared a state of emergency which includes ascension, East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Pointe Coupee, West Feliciana, St. James, and St. Martin.
