Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Twenty barges were making their way down the Mississippi River near the US-190 bridge when four broke loose and three sank.
Initial reports were that one the barges hit the old Mississippi River Bridge and another was leaking sulfuric acid, but officials say that’s not true.
NBC33 was told that one barge did hit the dock at the Rhodia chemical plant.
The accident shut down traffic on the bridge as a precaution for about 45 minutes.
The Coast Guard has closed the Mississippi River to barge traffic indefinitely, but says everything and everyone is safe.
NBC33 has just learned that one of those barges has semi-surfaced and is floating south down the river. The Sheriff’s Office has contacted State Police Gaming and they are recommending the evacuation of the Hollywood Casino.
