Angola begins evacuations
ANGOLA STATE PEN. (NBC33) - — Thousands of inmates have started to evacuate from Angola. That as the Mississippi River keeps rising.
Almost 200 ill inmates are being transferred to Hunt Correctional. Warden Burl Cain says the evacuations will continue through Wednesday. By the time the evacuations are done, up to 2000 inmates would have been transferred to other State Prisons.
Several thousand inmates are staying behind at Angola to fight the flood. Many are still filling sandbags, and placing them all along the levee.
The water at Angola is over 65 feet high. The projected crest is just below 70. It's the most water ever seen at the Prison.
