Officers rescued a 22-year-old LSU student from Kenner on Tuesday night after he’d been reported missing on Monday evening.

The student was hunting wild hogs with a friend in the Atchafalaya Basin about two miles west of Grand Lake on Monday, Jan. 6.

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on Monday, the student was reported missing. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries along with officers from St. Martin Parish and Assumption Parish searched for the missing hunter.

Rescuers eventually located him on a gas platform nearly two miles away (through the swamp) from the hunters’ original location.

According to a report by the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office, the LSU student returned to the boat to retrieve and item when he was apparently separated from his hunting partner.

He stated that at one point he swam across a canal and had to remove his waders to avoid drowning.

Nighttime temperatures in that area were well below freezing.

The rescued hunter was taken to the Belle River public launch and examined by emergency responders. He was later transported to a regional medical center where he’s being observed for exposure and hypothermia.
