Officials in New Roads are getting ready for the grand opening of a new state-of-the art recreational complex.

Mayor Robert Myer says the recreational complex at Community Park will have a skateboard and BMX park, along with a “splash pad” area where children can safely play in the water.

A new playground will include a rock climbing wall, musical panels, a store front, and other games.

Cherie Rockforte, a spokesperson for the city of New Roads, says the equipment at the splash pad and playground is ADA compliant for children with disabilities.

Myer says a walking trail, a mediation garden and additional landscaping will be added before the end of summer.

Community Park’s recreational complex is part of a three phase revitalization plan, with work beginning three years ago.

The previous two phases refurbished the Cotton Seed Oil Mill and added a new sports field.

Construction for the park was made possible by state and private funding as well as volunteer labor.
Mayor Myer added that latest improvements to the park “are just one more step in having recreation and fun available here so our families can stay at home rather than having to go to another city for entertainment.”

The opening ceremony will be on August 1, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Community Park.

Free hot dogs will be available to the public along with music and family-friendly entertainment, such as balloon artists.
