BAKER, La. (WVLA) UPDATED 10/28/10: A drive-by shooting in the normally quiet community of Baker catches residents and police off-guard.
Police say just before 9 Tuesday night residents on Polk Street called 911 after hearing multiple shots fired.
When officers arrived to the scene they found a 24-year-old man shot in the chest.
They say they're looking for the man who pulled the trigger.
"I don't even remember the last time we had a shooting in Baker. I can't recall the last homicide that's been although i was the one who worked it to tell you how long ago it's been" says Baker police spokesman Lt. James Broussard.
Police did not identify the victim but they say he's been in an on-going feud with someone. They say the shooting victim was shot in the hand last week. As of Wednesday night, the victim was in the hospital but is expected to be ok.
Authorities say its possible one man was the victim of a shooting last night, but they're not sure yet.
Police say around 8:30 PM several people called 9-1-1 reporting several shots fired near the 3000 block of Polk Street. But when investigators questioned neighbors, they got differing accounts.
Authorities say the male victim was transported to Lane hospital with injuries, but violent crime is so uncommon at the hospital in Zachary, doctors were unable to tell if the victim was suffering from gunshot wounds or another type of injury.
Baker police detectives say the victim has been transported to Our Lady of the Lake hospital because he was bleeding internally. They say they'll release more details as they learn them.
Chief of Police Mike Knaps says there have only been a few shootings in Baker in 2010. They say if this man was gunned down last night, that would be the second time he was shot this year. They say a few months back someone shot this same victim in the hand.
