A possible $175 million cut in funding has LSU officials worried they won’t be able to compete with other public universities. The LSU system says it would have to lay off as many as 650 instructors and more than 1,200 support employees from its campuses around the state. Officials say, if the budget cut happens, athletics programs, student services, and maintenance would also have to be scaled back.
LSU President John Lombardi says, “Louisiana looks like it is going to do better than the rest of the country, so we hove the Governor and legislature will be able to soften that blow in an effective way.” The budget cuts are not certain. The Governor’s budget advisers are looking at proposals for possible cuts from other state offices.
