Louisiana soldier killed in Afghanistan
GHUNDAY GHAR, AFGHANISTAN (WVLA)--A Louisiana soldier is among the recent casualties of the war in Afghanistan.
Spc Matthew Powell, 20, of Slidell died October 12th. The U.S. Department of Defense says Powell was killed when insurgents attacked his military vehicle using an improvised explosive device.
Powell was assigned to the Army's 526th Brigade Support Battalion. He joined the U.S. Army back in 2008.
During his service he was awarded National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorrism Service Medal, and Army Service ribbon.
He is survived by his father Lloyd Powell of Baton Rouge and his mother Janice Powell of Slidell.
