Wednesday Baton Rouge children spoke out against the violence plaguing their city.

Gun violence has riddled Tierra Pitt's life since she was just a few months old. When she was one, a young cousin accidently shot her through the leg.

"It messed me up for a while. I was really embarrassed to do a lot of things because of what happened to me at such a young age," said Pitts.

Since that time she has watched her cousin, best friend and father all die from gun violence.

"It’s a bad thing, but I’ve gotten so used to it. So when it happens I am just like, 'I wish it would hurry up and go away.' Because I know how it will all end and I know how it is going through it and I am just ready for it to go away and settle down."

So she and close to 200 others are asking their lawmakers to make small changes to gun laws.

"I am here to try to change the laws so people can use the common sense law more often so people will use their guns the right way and not the wrong," said Darren Smith, a young participant.

"We came out to basically make a statement, make a stand in our community to let our legislators know we want to see a change in gun safety laws. It's happening so much that the kids are numb to it; the communities are numb to it. It's just like every day someone else dies for senseless reasons," said Solomon Johnson, one of the rally’s organizers.

Pitts said she's not asking them to take away people's guns, just force them to be safer so no other child has to go through what she's been through.

"You think, 'is it a dream? Am I going to wake up yet?' but no it's not a dream, it's real and something needs to be done about it," she explained.

The kids participating in the rally said they just want to grow up in a safer city and they're hoping for more gun safety laws and background checks.
