THIS IS AN NBC33 NEWS UPDATE: The Metro Council has approved the $20,000 needed to install 12 cameras within the Hermitage subdivision in Gardere.

ORIGINAL STORY: People living in the Gardere area want to make their community safer by adding crime cameras.

They would be installed within the Hermitage subdivision off of Gardere Lane and Old Hermitage Parkway.

The subdivision already pays for extra patrols throughout their neighborhood, but those who live in the subdivision have mixed feelings about the cameras.

"I think that would be a nice thing just to keep it safer,” Latonia Ireland, said. “There's a lot of children, crime in the area, so cameras make people think twice before they do anything."

“No, it's not going to make a big difference, because you have the Sheriff's Department patrolling 24/7,” Jeffery Livois, argues. “If they are not doing enough already by themselves then that's their problem. They are out every day, all day."

The cameras first need the approval of the Metro Council before they can be installed. The item is on the agenda at the Metro Council meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
