BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — One Baton Rouge council member is making another push to keep the city's misdemeanor jail open around the clock.
The facility downtown was open for several weeks last year.
Almost two hundred thousand dollars in fines were collected, and officials cleared thousands of warrants.
Now, Mayor Pro Tem Mike Walker says he'll ask council for $50,000 to keep the jail around 24/7.
Other council members say they're on board.
“We have people with fines on the books with 4, 5, 6 traffic violations that are not clearing them up because people feel like they are not going to jail for them,” C. Denise Marcelle, Baton Rouge Metro Council, explained.
We tried to get a comment on the jail proposal from Mayor Holden, but he was unavailable.
