A Senate Committee gathered on Monday to try and find solutions  to the state's poverty problem.

Representatives from various groups who focus on helping women and children got a chance to share their concerns They told the committee the poverty problem could be cut drastically if more jobs were created. This would help provide economic stability for those who currently live below the poverty line.

"Higher levels of poverty. They reduce demand in the economy, so it costs jobs for all of us. By having lower educatonal levels, it limits the number of entrepeneurs and job producers in the economy and of course child poverty especially carries heavy long term economic and social costs," says Half in Ten Director Melissa Boteach.

Other solutions they say could cure the povety problem include increasing access to affordable housing, strengthening social security and boosting funding for education.
