Twenty-six senators returned ballots late Thursday evening to cancel out an automatic veto session.

The session was automatically set to start on July 16, unless either 2/3rds of the House or Senate voted against it.

Only 20 votes from Senators were needed to cancel the session, 26 votes were returned.

"At this time, I am of the belief that not holding a veto session is in our state's best interest, considering the costs involved and the uncertainty of garnering the necessary two-thirds vote to override any veto," said Senate President John Alario said.

Several groups called for the veto session after Governor Bobby Jindal vetoed portions of their funding.

NBC33's Alex Deiro will have more on this tonight on NBC33 news at 5:00 & 6:30.
