Louisiana's Secretary of State says there are simply too many elections in the Bayou State. Tom Schedler says reducing the number of elections will save the state millions of dollars.

According to a study done throughout the southeast part of the United States, Louisiana has the highest number of elections over the last five years. Thirty-two out of the 70 elections were special elections to replace legislators who had resigned. Schedler proposed consolidating, and holding those elections on known election dates.

"It seems like almost every other weekend, somewhere in the state, we're having an election," says Schedler. "People don't know about it. Voter turnout is dismal."

Schedler's bill passed unanimously in the House and Governmental Affairs Committee Wednesday. It now moves to the House floor.
