Port Allen council reviews budget; no budget for months

PORT ALLEN, LA (NBC33) — The council voted unanimously to consider this fiscal year's proposed budget. Council members and residents say this is what they've been waiting for.
"The budget stands introduced," announced Interim Mayor Lynn Robertson. After a six month long wait, the city of Port Allen has a budget on the table. "We just rolled up our sleeves, we talked to department heads [and] met
with the city council people," said Robertson. "Everyone was just on the same page; we knew we needed to get a budget adopted."
There are 5.9 million dollars in the general fund. $180,000 will go to the police department, scoring them at least 6 new
units. $52,000 will replace gas meters in the city, and $375,000 per year will go to a 5-year road improvement plan.
Officials say, this is a step in the right direction. Audrey McCain, Chief Financial Officer, said "People like Ms. Ray Helen comes up with a great idea of having the community come together for Christmas. I only have 600 dollars to do that with. It made it difficult for me to have to say 'no' to a very worthwhile event to the city and our citizens.
Citizen, Jason Hammack, says the budget is long overdue. "I'm a citizen and a business owner over here. so having this
certainty in our city government just goes a long way in keeping a load off my shoulders."
Residents and the council did agree on one thing. "Everyone wants the same thing, to work for what's best for the city," said Robertson.
McCain added, "We can work together for a common goal of getting a budget, which is just a framework anyway." Hammack simply said, "Business got done."
Copies of the proposed budget will be available at city hall on the 26th of December. You'll be able to weigh in at a public meeting January 8th.
