Painter drops out of Ascension Parish Sheriff race
Ascension Parish, La (NBC33) — Murphy Painter will not be in the running to become the next sheriff in Ascension Parish. The Secretary of State's Office says Painter dropped out of the race this morning.
Since qualifying is over, that means Sheriff Jeff Wiley will stay in that position for at least the next four years.
Murphy is a former Alcohol and Tobacco Control Commissioner. He resigned from that post last year.
Since then, Painter's been fighting allegations of sexually harassing employees, and running illegal background checks on private citizens and government employees.
