BATON ROUGE (NBC33) — The Metro Council Wednesday voted to annex Our Lady of the Lake, Baton Rouge General, and the Mall of Louisiana into Baton Rouge so that they are not looped into the proposed city of St. George.
People who support the annexation say, if the businesses want to be part of the city they should be allowed to join.
Opponents say the annexation would compromise public safety by slashing the budget for the Saint George Fire Department. Opponents also say they want EBR Parish voters to have the opportunity to decide for themselves, and the annexation will prevent that. Many believe it’s an intentional effort by the Metro Council to derail the St. George incorporation efforts.
Parents who support the incorporation of St. George say they want their kids to have better educational opportunities. They believe the only way that will happen is if they create a new city and forms its own school system.
Mayor-President Kip Holden was the final speaker. He focused on the green light project, saying EBR voters paid for 300 million worth of green light projects in what would be the city of Saint George. He also said that tax revenue from the Mall of Louisiana would only account for two percent of the St. George Fire Protection District.
Kip Holden says it’s wrong to hold the EBR parish school system responsible for the quality of schools. He says we should hold ‘parents’ accountable for their children and the success of the schools. He also noted that many public schools are doing well and that his own children went to public schools.
A majority of the Council voted to annex the three businesses.
