Louisiana public defenders operating with minimal oversight, says audit
BATON ROUGE (NBC33) — According to the Louisiana Legislative Auditor, the Louisiana Public Defender Board has not been making sure public defenders are doing their jobs effectively.
An audit released on Monday also says the board isn't tracking the costs for public defenders, which is a violation of state law.
Part of the problem is supposedly that there aren't enough qualified people working for the board. Some of the most experienced board members have stepped down over the past few years.
The board agrees with changes suggested by the Legislative Auditor's Office. Those changes would help the board keep operating with more oversight of public defenders.
