Louisiana already has several official symbols to represent the state, such as the brown pelican for our state bird, and the magnolia for our state flower.

However, one symbol we have not officially decided on is a state book.

One state Representative has plans to change that. Republican Representative Thomas Carmody proposed a bill that will make a special edition of the bible Louisiana’s official state book.

The proposal is based on the words of the state’s pledge of allegiance: "A state, under God, united in purpose and ideals, confident that justice shall prevail for all of those abiding here."

The official version of the state book would be the oldest edition of the Holy Bible currently housed in the Louisiana State Museum system.
